My history with Cycloid Drawing Machine

I saw an interesting video on Weibo in 2016. That thing they call a 10 thousand flower ruler. The real name should be Cycloid drawing machine. Use a wooden gear driver to draw various interesting patterns. This is an interesting machine. Created by Joe Freedman on kickstarter.com

So I dug up the history of the device. The earliest emergence did not know what time it was, at least it looks very old.

In the 40s of last century, metal gears appeared again. However, he has changed his Pen Holder. The device is now available on ebay, and its name is Hoot Nanny.

  • These devices have the same place.

  • There are also different places.

  • Can they be combined together?

I decided to make a try.

Several test versions look good. You can draw a wide variety of ever-changing graphics. Can also use a ruler-shaped pen holder. The scissor-type penholder simplifies the original complex structure. Placement of complex gears and connecting rods is a disaster.

If you want to replace a piece of drawing paper across three connecting rods, it feels as if it is difficult to remove an engine. We use scissors-type penholders to easily draw very complex patterns. Very easy to place or remove the pen holder.
